Effect of ENTERO^(¢ç)(yogurt of new cultures) on Blood Cholesterol Level of Healthy Korean Men in Their Forties

Abstract
We have conducted this study to evaluate the effect of Entero (Yogurt of new cultures) on blood cholesterol level of healthy Korean adult men in age of 35 to 54, with multi-center trial methods and double blind methods. 106 men from 484 male school teachers were confirmed as normal by physical examinations, total cholesterol(TC, 160-240mg/dl), triglycerides(TG), low density lipoprotein-cho-lesterol(LDL-C), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol(HDL-C), blood glucose and insulin levels on baseline of the study. Except 6 men who didn¢¥t have Entero diets more than 4 times during the study, 100 men were allocated to Entero A group(n=54) and Entero B group (n=46).
Entero A contains cultures of L acidophilus, S. thermophilus and E. faecium, and Entero B contains cultures of L acidophilus and S. thermophilus, respectively. There were no significant difference of age, height, body weight, blood pressure, total cholesterol, TG, LDL-C, HDL-C, insulin
and glucose levels between Entero A and Entero B groups. They were carefully instructed to maintain their ordinary life style including dietary habits, alcoholic drinking, smoking, and exercise during the study. The cholesterol lowering effect of Entero A and B were assessed by physical examinations and blood lipid levels as same as baseline studies following 3 weeks and 6 weeks diets.
The results were as follows
l. After 3 weeks and 6 weeks diets, total cholesterol decreased significantly in the both groups. In comparison with the baseline values, total cholesterol decreased 12.1 mg/dl and 13.8tng/dl in Entero A group, 6.3mg/dl and 10.6mg/dl in Entero B group, respectively. However no significant difference was observed between Entero A diet and Entero B diet.
2. Entero A and B cultures decreased LDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol at 3 and 6 weeks in compare to those of baseline studies.
With above results, it seems that cultures in Entero A, L acidophilus, S. Mernnophilus and E. faecium have a cholesterol lowering effect.
